Summary : An ASCII art GFX library
Description :
AA-lib is a low level gfx library just as many other libraries are.
The main difference is that AA-lib does not require graphics device.

linux boots with a nice penguin logo at secondary display (yes! Like
Win95 does:) AA-lib API is designed to be similar to other graphics
libraries. Learning a new API would be a piece of cake!

Summary : A curses-based apt frontend
Description :
Aptitude is a curses-based apt frontend with a number of useful extended
features, including: a mutt-like syntax for matching packages in a flexible and
extreme flexibility and customization.
Some command line usage for 'apt' without using Aptitude I've
learnt, and to bring you up-to-date with a cool Debian like
'feel' - can be used like this, within aLinux:
[Most of these techniques are simplified for first time users]
apt-get update (updates and/or builds the repository cache)
apt-get upgrade (I always run this firstly to set most vitals)
apt-get dist-upgrade (good run after the 'upgrade' secondary)
apt-get install xrick (installs application xrick)
apt-get remove xrick (removes application xrick)
apt-get install xrick chromium- toppler- XParticles+ (installs
xrick & XParticles while removing chromium & toppler all in one).
[Check this out - save ya on typing chars. Yes, wild cards!]
apt-get install xri* toppl*- XParti*- perl-Ext*-
You would think the above removes xrick, etc .. but now your
about to start understanding the power of apt. See for yourself.
Note, think of apt like a database for every file and package
on your system. It understands *everything*. You can use it
like this even. Say your doing something and all of a sudden
the prgram tells you your missing a file ..lets take '/bin/arch'
for instance. "'/bin/arch' not found" - hmm, now what package
could /bin/arch be from... no need to google, 'apt' knows :)
apt-get install /bin/arch (wow 'util-linux' cool.)
apt-get install /usr/lib/somelib.so (that's missing or remove
it replacing 'install' with 'remove'. (Installs or Removes
the entire package contents of /usr/lib/somelib.so)
apt-shell (command line shell - self explanatory)
apt-get moo (cute Cow - "Have you mooed today?" :)
For the complete index manual for endless apt usage, see
http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man8/apt-get.8.html
NOTE: Using Aptitude - Aptitude is nicer Graphical front-end
to APT - Saves us issuing commands described above. Now, when
using Aptitude - it's another powerfull tool that takes a
while to learn but becomes a breeze when used properly. Saves
us precious time on updates and upgrading in a mouse point &
click tradition. Another small note, aptitude is not as stable
as Synaptic, but it is a little more powerfull then Synaptic.

cvs -z3 -d :pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/autoconf co autoconf
GNU's Autoconf is a tool for configuring source code and Makefiles.
Using Autoconf, programmers can create portable and configurable
packages, since the person building the package is allowed to
specify various configuration options.
You should install Autoconf if you are developing software and you'd
like to use it to create shell scripts which will configure your
source code packages. If you are installing Autoconf, you will also
need to install the GNU m4 package.
Note that the Autoconf package is not required for the end user who
may be configuring software with an Autoconf-generated script;
Autoconf is only required for the generation of the scripts, not
their use.

Summary : A GNU general-purpose parser generator
Description :
Bison is a general purpose parser generator which converts a grammar
description for an LALR context-free grammar into a C program to parse
that grammar. Bison can be used to develop a wide range of language
parsers, from ones used in simple desk calculators to complex
programming languages. Bison is upwardly compatible with Yacc, so any
correctly written Yacc grammar should work with Bison without any
changes. If you know Yacc, you shouldn't have any trouble using Bison
(but you do need to be very proficient in C programming to be able to
use Bison). Many programs use Bison as part of their build process.
Bison is only needed on systems that are used for development.

VMWARE/Plex86 like emulator, only this one is free, smaller & runs many OS's.

Description :
You are captain of the cargo ship Chromium B.S.U., responsible for
delivering supplies to our troops on the front line. Your ship
has a small fleet of robotic fighters which you control from the
relative safety of the Chromium vessel.
- Do not let ANY enemy ships get past your fighters! Each enemy
ship that makes it past the bottom of the screen will attack
the Chromium, and you lose a fighter.
- Use your fighters as weapons! Crash into enemies to destroy them
before they can get past you.
- Strategic suicide is a powerful tactic! When the Chromium
launches a new fighter, it releases a high energy burst which
destroys all enemies in range.
- Self-destruct to preserve your ammunition! A double-right-click
will cause your current fighter to self-destruct. Before the
ship blows up, it ejects its ammunition so that the next fighter
can pick it up.

Summary : A GNU archiving program.
Description :
GNU cpio copies files into or out of a cpio or tar archive. Archives
are files which contain a collection of other files plus information
about them, such as their file name, owner, timestamps, and access
permissions. The archive can be another file on the disk, a magnetic
tape, or a pipe. GNU cpio supports the following archive formats:
binary, old ASCII, new ASCII, crc, HPUX binary, HPUX old ASCII, old
tar, and POSIX.1 tar.
By default, cpio creates binary format archives, so that they are
compatible with older cpio programs. When it is extracting files
from archives, cpio automatically recognizes which kind of archive
it is reading and can read archives created on machines with a different
byte-order.

Summary : A password-checking library.
Description :
CrackLib tests passwords to determine whether they match certain
security-oriented characteristics, with the purpose of stopping users
from choosing passwords that are easy to guess. CrackLib performs
several tests on passwords: it tries to generate words from a username
and gecos entry and checks those words against the password; it checks
for simplistic patterns in passwords; and it checks for the password
in a dictionary.
CrackLib is actually a library containing a particular C function
which is used to check the password, as well as other C
functions. CrackLib is not a replacement for a passwd program; it must
be used in conjunction with an existing passwd program.
Install the cracklib package if you need a program to check users'
passwords to see if they are at least minimally secure. If you install
CrackLib, you will also want to install the cracklib-dicts package.

Crystal is a kwin window decoration theme, which offers you (pseudo)
TRANSPARENT titlebar, buttons and borders. Check out my screenshots!
It also has some little usuability enhancements.
Main features:
* The style grabs your wallpaper and uses it as the deco background.
It has several blending modes, i.e. it can fade the background into
the defined title bar color, or it can brighten or darken the wallp
aper, as well as blur the source image to simulate glass.
* Choose the blending color of the buttons.
* You can define the title bar height and border size of the windows.
* Right click on minimize button toggles shade mode.
* Middle click on minimize button sends window to below.
* Double click on program symbol closes window.
* Support for button themes. Basic button theme is included, feel free to swamp me with cool themes.
* Can show a tooltip of the caption
* Mouse-wheel on the title bar to 'scroll' to all opened windows of the same desktop.
Disadvantages:
- Crystal needs KDE >=3.2 and QT>=3.2.
- May be very slow and memory consuming.
- Don't forget to breathe, while drooling.

Summary : A version control system.
Description :
CVS (Concurrent Version System) is a version control system that can
record the history of your files (usually, but not always, source
code). CVS only stores the differences between versions, instead of
every version of every file you have ever created. CVS also keeps a log
of who, when, and why changes occurred.
CVS is very helpful for managing releases and controlling the
concurrent editing of source files among multiple authors. Instead of
providing version control for a collection of files in a single
directory, CVS provides version control for a hierarchical collection
of directories consisting of revision controlled files. These
directories and files can then be combined together to form a software
release.
